Mass Effect 3 Brings Commander Shepard Back to Earth

EA seems set to raise the bar once more with their newly unveiled trailer for the hotly anticipated Mass Effect 3.

Commander Shepard needs to get his/her (depending on the player’s gender choice) ass back in gear to save humanity once more. However, this time it seems humanity’s doom will be getting up close and personal, as Earth itself will be the front line.

The sense of scale has been brilliantly achieved by focusing on one individual’s desperate holding action then zooming out to encompass the whole of London being mercilessly battered by the unknown invader. Then the conflict is shown to be wider still as Commander Shepard looks down from high orbit at the flickering fires scorching across Earth’s atmosphere.

Heady stuff, but no less than we’ve come to expect from Mass Effect creator BioWare. The stellar success of Mass Effect 2 for both the PC and Xbox 360 means that the third in the series will have to be truly spectacular to top its predecessor.

While the winning combination of skill-based combat, space exploration elements and engaging choice-based dialogue is unlikely to change for Mass Effect 3, setting the game in our own galaxy will afford BioWare some interesting opportunities.

For starters, an exploration of Earth’s war-torn landscape should give players a very engaging setting right from the opening credits. Then, if BioWare employs its customary style in weaving a truly immersive story around the action, we can rightly expect a colorful blend of new party members and NPCs to help or hinder Shepard’s quest to allow humanity to avoid annihilation.

The most important question is: what will Commander Shepard’s favorite store on the planet be?
